Although there are a number of metabolic advantages to increasing protein intake, some sources of proteins are not easily digested by the enzymes of the gastrointestinal tract. The undigested protein ends up in the large intestine and can be fermented by the intestinal flora. Some of the metabolic byproducts of this fermentation can be potentially toxic. Therefore, it is vitally important that protein is digested as completely as possible, and absorbed by the small intestine before reaching the large intestine.*
