Overindulgence and Digestion

Friday, December 18th, 2009

If we were to take votes on when to mark the start of ‘enzyme season’ on a calendar, there is little doubt that the months of November – January would score high.

Delicious desserts and savory seasoned meals lead many to overindulge, increasing our waistline sand often resulting in indigestion and occasional bloating and gas.  But there is hope! A quality digestive enzyme supplement will promote healthy digestion and potentially cut off such problems at the pass.

Enzymedica Visits the Autism Treatment Center of America

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Enzymedica has long supported autism awareness.   Enzymedica’s visionary founder, Tom Bohager, recognized the power of education and hope for families facing the autism diagnosis.  His mission was fostered through Enzymedica’s financial support of the nationwide Autism Grass Roots Tour. Bohager’s vision was later fulfilled through the creation of the Autism Hope Alliance foundation.

Autism Hope Alliance foundation Autism Grass Roots Tour

A key partner of the Autism Hope Alliance is the Autism Treatment Center of America™ (ATCA).  The ATCA offers five day workshops to teach parents coping skills and helpful techniques for dealing with their autistic children.  The educational home of the prestigious Son-Rise Program®, the Center has for the last thirty years helped families worldwide enable their children with autism to far outstrip their original prognoses, leading in some cases to full recovery.

Recently, Tom Bohager, Enzymedica’s founder and Operating Chairman, CEO Scott Sensenbrenner and Dave Barton Enzymedica’s Director of Education were invited to visit the Center in Sheffield, Massachusetts.  Over the course of a weekend they were given opportunity to sit in on group sessions and lectures that inspired hope and a sense of community among family members of autistic children.

Dave Barton Enzymedica’s Director of Education

Dave Barton

“The visit was a deeply moving experience,” shares Dave Barton, “but what really struck me was the enthusiasm presented by the instructors at the facility.”

Barton detailed his observation of an instructor working one-on-one with an eight year old who had no verbal or visual contact.   “The whole week for this particular boy focused on getting him to make eye contact with the teacher.  By the end of the week, the boy was not only making eye contact, but laughing as well!”

According to Dave, this experience embodies the intent of the Autism Treatment Center of America. A novel approach, the Center’s workshops enable parents to join their autistic children in their own world, rather than asking the child to enter the world of their parents.  The program places parents as key teachers, therapists and directors of their own programs, and utilizes the home as the most nurturing environment in which to help their children.

New Studies on Enzymedica’s Unique Thera-blend Process

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Recent findings by a researcher at the National University of Ireland, Galway, have reconfirmed the efficacy and function of Enzymedica’s trademarked Thera-blend™ process.

Figure 1 illustrates how a blend of one type of enzyme (such as protease) enhance the range of activity for a Thera-Blend™. Notice that there are three proteases shown. All have a slightly different optimal pH at normal body temperature. By combining the three we are able to achieve greater activity over a broader pH range (this is not an exact graph it is simply meant to illustrate the benefit of Thera-Blend™).

Thera-blend is Enzymedica’s exclusive blending process used for the protease, lipase, amylase, and cellulase enzymes in the company’s formulas. The goal of the process is to blend several strains of each enzyme to achieve greater activity over a broader pH range. The end result of the Thera-blend method is increased potency, as enzymes are enabled to break down more bonds throughout the entire digestive system. The variety of strains also makes the formulas more effective systemically.

The positive correlation was validated by Dr. Maria Tuohy, while studying an unrelated enzymatic assay obtained from Enzymedica’s GlutenEase™ formula for its starch-modifying and proteolytic activities. [Its ability to break down starches and proteins.]

Scott Sensenbrenner, CEO of Enzymedica shares, “These recent findings corroborate previous tests by the manufacturer and Enzymedica is excited to share the news. As a science-based company we will continue to pursue research to further substantiate our product claims.”

In Figure 2 Notice how a multiple blend of one enzyme has the ability to break more protein, carbohydrates or fat bonds than a single enzyme.

Oral Proteases

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

19_virastopProteases, or proteolytic enzymes are specific for protein digestion. Simply put, protease enzymes break down proteins, be they undigested proteins in the digestive system, cellular debris or toxins in the blood.  Some proteolytic enzymes work specifically in the bloodstream to support metabolic reactions like healthy cellular repair and immunity, sparking the chemical reactions required to sustain life. The body employs protease enzymes to break down foreign invaders such as bacteria, yeasts, and viruses.

Oral Proteases

Research has shown that oral proteases, taken as a dietary supplement on an empty stomach may aid our immune system in ways other supplements can’t. These supplemental enzymes are absorbed and carried into the blood stream where they are bound to plasma proteins. The oral proteases bind to these plasma proteins and then are able to break down protein-based pathogens in the blood. An interesting attribute of protease enzymes is that while they are able to dissolve almost all proteins, this only applies to proteins that are not components of living cells. For protease to digest a protein it must be damaged, attached to a dead organism, or be a protein that does not belong in the body. This instinctively intelligent process explains why proteases will digest proteins found in steak, however leave the protein lining of our stomach unharmed.

Not all proteases, however, can break down all proteins. For instance, one protease in particular has been shown to have a profound effect on mucus. Mucolase is a special enzyme that is classified as proteolytic and mucolytic. Mucolytic enzymes break down excess mucus in the body, including the lungs and sinuses. Other proteolytic enzymes useful for the immune system are nattokinase, catalase and serratiopeptidase (serrapeptase).

When enzymes are used to achieve a therapeutic effect, they are taken on an empty stomach (a half hour before or two hours after a meal). They are not intended to help digest food. Instead they are absorbed into the blood and benefit different systems of the body, such as the immune system, by providing it with essential enzymes to manufacture healthy white blood cells.
